The third day of CKTG 2026 (League of Legends World Championship 2026), the biggest tournament of the popular MOBA game League of Legends, has concluded. The picture of the tournament became almost clear on this day, where on one side the teams of the Korean region (LCK) maintained their dominance, the teams of the Chinese region (LPL) showed signs of finding their rhythm, while the European region (LEC) teams suffered a crushing defeat. By the end of the third day, both Gen.G and DK secured their spots in the playoffs by remaining unbeaten, while both major LEC teams, G2 and MKOI, failed to register a single win.
The day began with a thrilling match between Invictus Gaming (IG) and Hanwha Life Esports (HLE). HLE was considered the stronger opponent, but IG pulled off a major upset by defeating them. The hero of this victory was their bot laner JiaQi, who gave his team a personal gold lead before the 19-minute mark and proved to be the brightest star of the day. Following this loss, HLE is now on the brink of elimination and must win their next match at all costs. On the other hand, IG's victory proved that LPL teams are gradually finding their form in this tournament. In the same vein, Top Esports (TES) defeated G2 Esports, signaling their return to form. TES top laner 369 delivered an excellent performance on Ambessa, putting his team in a strong position after 25 minutes and closing out the match in the next 10 minutes.
The most impressive match of the day was seen between Dplus KIA (DK) and Movistar KOI (MKOI). DK won this series 2-0 and booked their playoff ticket. In the first game, DK picked a late-game scaling composition and proved that they know how to dominate long matches. In the second game, DK's marksman player Smash achieved a Pentakill on Kai'Sa, which was the first Pentakill of CKTG 2026. This achievement became the most exciting moment of the match. MKOI's strategy was to neutralize Smash's teammate ShowMaker's signature Syndra by picking Diana, but early mistakes completely shattered their plan. This loss highlights MKOI's weak draft identity and lack of team coordination.
The day concluded with a thrilling match between Gen.G and LYON. This series stretched to a third and decisive game, where Gen.G defeated LYON to secure their playoff spot. The hero of this series was Gen.G's top laner Kiin, who was named the 'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) of the series. He provided a strong foundation for his team with a KDA of 10/4/19 across three games. His Camille champion became a major headache for the opposing team in the mid-game and carried his team forward. LYON's two-marksman composition did not work in the decisive game, as Gen.G had a mid-game playmaker in the form of Kiin to punish them. LYON's jungler Inspired's record against Gen.G continued, as this was the third time in his career that he could not secure a win against this team.
Looking at the overall picture of the third day, a clear polarization is visible in the tournament. On one side, Gen.G and DK, remaining unbeaten with a 3-0 record, have earned a rest advantage, while on the other side, the day was completely disappointing for the LEC. Both G2 and MKOI suffered defeats, putting LEC teams under elimination pressure. The main concern for G2 is their team coordination and macro-play, which does not match their league-level (LEC) performance. Such structural issues are difficult to fix in a short time.
Meanwhile, the improvement in the LPL's situation is clearly visible. But the biggest story of the day is also the gap within the Korean teams. While Gen.G and DK made it to the playoffs with excellent performances as expected, HLE faces the threat of elimination. This proves that the LCK's strength is concentrated at the top, rather than being evenly distributed.
Speaking of the playoffs, Gen.G and DK will get extra rest time, which will give them an opportunity to strategize for the next round and analyze their opponents. However, an important caveat is that the Swiss stage is played in a BO3 format, while the playoffs will be in a BO5 format. Although DK's performance has been excellent, their depth has not yet been proven in BO5. Their dependence on Smash could become a risk if strong opponents ban out their carry pool.
Talking about the stars of the day, Kiin (Gen.G) and Smash (DK) drew everyone's attention with their talent. IG's JiaQi also came into the spotlight thanks to a single match, but judging a player's ability based on just one match would be premature. There are still many twists and turns left in this tournament, and the teams currently under pressure could change the course of the competition in the coming rounds.
The results of this day have made it clear that the competition in CKTG 2026 is extremely fierce. While on one hand the top teams are proving their strength, on the other hand, there is no room for error left for the weaker teams. The battle for HLE and the LEC teams to make a comeback or get eliminated in the next round of matches will be worth watching.
