Peres Jepchirchir provisionally suspended after EPO positive test, Sydney Marathon win under cloud
Olympic and World Championships marathon gold medallist Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO (erythropoietin). The 33-year-old Kenyan provided the sample in Kenya before winning the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026, meaning the sample was collected in the build-up to the very race she went on to win by a wide margin.
The news represents the biggest crisis of a career that had placed Jepchirchir among the most decorated long-distance runners of her generation. She is one of a very small group of women with both an Olympic marathon title and a world marathon title to her name, and she now faces the task of explaining how a banned blood-boosting substance entered her system.
When and where the sample was taken
According to the AIU, the sample was collected out of competition in Kenya, before the Sydney race. That detail makes the case especially significant, because out-of-competition testing exists precisely to monitor athletes away from the days of competition. For substances such as EPO, that window is critical: once injected, the substance remains detectable in urine or blood only for a short period of time.
Crucially, the sample was given before the race and the race was won afterwards. That places both the Sydney performance and the title under scrutiny. Under anti-doping rules, results achieved during a period in which a violation is established can be annulled. At this stage, however, the suspension is provisional and no final finding has been made.
The Sydney performance
Jepchirchir clocked two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds to win in Sydney, one of the fastest times ever recorded in the women's marathon. She finished more than three minutes clear of her compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai, an unusually large margin at elite marathon level and one that investigators may examine closely.
The victory carried extra weight because Sydney became the seventh World Marathon Major in 2026, joining the sport's most prestigious circuit. A major title is among the biggest achievements available to any distance runner, and for Jepchirchir it represented a fourth major triumph, extending a career that already spanned the sport's biggest stages.
What EPO is and why it is banned
EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural substance produced within the kidneys that stimulates the creation of new red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles, and a higher count allows an athlete to deliver more oxygen to working muscles and delay fatigue.
If injected, EPO accelerates that process artificially, increasing the amount of red blood cells in the bloodstream and the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. In endurance sport that is a direct competitive advantage, which is why it is regarded as one of the most powerful forms of blood doping. In a marathon, where the final kilometres are decided by the body's ability to keep supplying oxygen, that advantage can be decisive.
Injected EPO is only detectable in urine or blood for a short window of time. That is why anti-doping bodies place heavy emphasis on surprise, out-of-competition testing: if a sample is not collected at the right moment, proving the use of EPO becomes extremely difficult. In this case, the sample was obtained before the race, which is technically significant for the investigation.
Career achievements
Jepchirchir's career has been one of the most consistent stories in long-distance running over the past decade. She became the Olympic women's marathon champion at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to the Japanese capital to win the World Championships marathon in September 2026. Winning marathon gold at both the Olympics and the World Championships is an achievement only a handful of women share.
She broke the women's half-marathon world record in 2026 and broke it on three further occasions in 2026. Her other major wins came at the New York Marathon in 2026, the Boston Marathon in 2026 and the London Marathon in 2026. The Sydney victory added a seventh-major title to a record that already spanned continents and course types.
Those achievements are precisely what make the current case so sensitive. When an athlete is at the peak of the sport, any doping allegation affects trust in the sport as a whole. In the marathon, where athletes build entire seasons around two or three major races, such allegations threaten the most productive years of a career.
What a provisional suspension means
A provisional suspension means the athlete cannot compete while the case is resolved. It is not a finding of guilt; it is a measure designed to protect the integrity of competition during the process. The athlete retains the right to respond, to request analysis of the B sample and to appear at a hearing.
The process typically examines whether the B sample also returns an adverse finding, whether there were any irregularities in collection or transport, and whether the athlete has a medical or scientific explanation. If a violation is established, sanctions can range from a period of ineligibility to the loss of medals and prize money. If the athlete is cleared, the suspension is lifted, but the time lost and the damage to reputation cannot be recovered.
Sydney's growing status
The case also arrives at an awkward moment for the Sydney Marathon, which is still establishing itself on the global stage. Sydney became a World Marathon Major in 2026, joining the seven-race circuit regarded as the pinnacle of distance running. Having the winner of that race under investigation is unwelcome for organisers, sponsors and broadcasters who had built campaigns around the result.
Kenyan distance running and the doping debate
Kenya is widely regarded as the sport's biggest production line for long-distance talent, and its athletes have repeatedly come under the scrutiny of anti-doping authorities in recent years. That climate means every major Kenyan performance is watched more closely than before, and it places extra burden on athletes competing cleanly.
In Jepchirchir's case it is important to remember that a provisional suspension is not a guilty verdict. It is equally true that defending an EPO case is technically narrow, because the substance occurs naturally in the body and cases often hinge on the quantities involved and the pattern of the athlete's blood profile.
What happens next
Attention now turns to the B sample and to the explanation the athlete provides. In the meantime she cannot compete, which will affect both her racing calendar and her commercial arrangements. For a marathon runner, even a forced break of a month or two disrupts form and planning.
Reaction within the sport has been mixed. Some see the case as evidence that the anti-doping system is working; others argue that drawing conclusions before a final decision would be premature. Either way, the case is a reminder that in modern sport even the greatest achievements are only secure once they withstand testing.
The coming months may prove the hardest of Jepchirchir's career. What she proved on the course, she must now answer for away from it.
